How To Clean Casement Windows

Casement windows, also know as crank windows, are energy efficient and can add greater ventilation in a home. If you have them, or are considering adding to your living or working space, here's how to clean casement windows.

1. Remove the screens.

If your casement windows have screens on them, be sure to remove them first. This can be done by rotating the screen clips and lifting the screen, and then pulling it out.

2. Make a DIY window cleaning solution.

Mix water, distilled vinegar, and dish soap together in a clean spray bottle and shake before each use.

3. Open the windows.

To open the windows, lift the lock handle and crank the window until it is open to a 90 degree angle. This will allow you to access the inside and outside of the windows.

4. Remove dust and dirt from the windows.

Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe away any loose dust or dirt from the windows and around the edges of the window.

5. Spray the windows liberally with window cleaner.

It's best to clean one window at a time to avoid a mess. You can also place a towel under the window you are cleaning to catch any drippings.

6. Squeegee the window.

Starting at the top of the window, run the squeegee from top to bottom, pulling any window cleaner and dirt along with it. Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe your squeegee clean after each row. Repeat until the entire window is clean.

7. Wipe any residual solution and debris off.

Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe away any cleaner or debris that has been left behind, paying special attention to the area around the window.

8. Repeat the process for the outside of each window.

9. Close the windows and replace the screens
