Easily Create A Modern Advent Calendar Using This Cute IKEA Pegboard

An advent calendar is the cutest way to mark the days until Christmas. (Nothing gets us quite as excited for the holiday season as a countdown, am I right?) This year, we've opted for a modern take on a holiday staple with a minimal calendar anyone can make.

Every day is a mini celebration with hidden candy, notes, or surprises tucked in each envelope. We've used an IKEA Skadis pegboard as inspiration for our calendar. With its simple clip system, it makes creating a DIY calendar as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Step 1

Begin by decorating your envelopes. We chose white coin envelopes so we could personalize them.

First we sprayed eight envelopes using black spray paint. Note: if you're using spray paint, work outside or in a well-ventilated area.

We then created a half-and-half design on eight others by laying a sheet of paper diagonally across the envelope before spraying them. We left the remaining envelopes white.

You could also paint them any color you choose or use pens to make your own envelope designs. (If you have kids, get them involved in the decorating process — they will love it!)

Step 2

Arrange your envelopes on the IKEA pegboard. You don't want to have the same patterns next to each other, so move them around until you find the right balance.

Once you're happy with the arrangement, you can number your envelopes. We've used some printed advent calendar stickers for ours, although you could also use plain stickers and decorate them using pens for a more personal touch!
