How To Remove Wine Stains With Baking Soda

Things Needed

  • Baking soda

  • Paper or cloth towels

  • Club soda

  • White wine

  • Bowl

  • Salt

Baking soda can effectively lift stains because it's slightly alkaline and abrasive. When combined with water, it forms a gentle cleaning paste that is an affordable treatment for removing wine stains. Baking soda is safe for use on both carpet and clothing. Use baking soda as quickly as possible after a wine stain occurs to remove the blemish and make your rug or fabric as good as new.

Carpet Wine Stain Removal

Step 1

Blot the wine stain with a cloth towel or paper towel while it is still wet.

Step 2

Mix one part water and three parts baking soda in a small bowl until it turns into a paste.

Step 3

Apply the paste to the wine stain and allow it to dry completely.

Step 4

Vacuum the stain and baking soda paste off of the carpet.

Fabric Wine Stain Removal

Step 1

Blot the stain with a dry towel to remove as much of the wine as you can. Don't scrub the stain, as this will rub it further into the fabric and make it harder to remove.

Step 2

Treat the stain with white wine if it is a red wine stain. Apply a small amount of white wine to help dilute the deep red color.

Step 3

Apply a small amount of club soda onto the wine stain to lift it further.

Step 4

Prepare a paste of salt, water and baking soda in a small bowl. Apply the paste on the fabric stain and let it set until the paste is completely dry.

Step 5

Wash the fabric in cold water with laundry detergent, per the instructions on the fabric tag.
