How To Reuse HEPA Filters

Things Needed

  • Vacuum cleaner

  • Soft rag or cloth

  • Liquid dish soap

Warning

Never saturate a non-reusable HEPA filter. The paper used in this type of filter can tear or rip if it becomes soaked.

HEPA filters use various fibers to trap dirt, dust, impurities and allergens in the air. They are commonly used in air purification systems or vacuum cleaners. Cleaning the filter and removing the buildup can restore the life of the filter and allow it to be reused. The two most common types of HEPA filters are washable and non-washable filters. Washable filters are composed of thick fibers which can get wet without tearing. Non-washable filters are composed of thin, paper thick fibers, making them harder to clean without the possibility of damage.

Non-Washable HEPA Filters

Step 1

Attach the fabric attachment to a vacuum cleaner.

Step 2

Run the vacuum cleaner over the HEPA filter gently to remove dust, dirt and buildup.

Step 3

Dampen a clean, soft rag under cool running water. Squeeze excess water from the cloth. Wipe away remaining buildup and residue. Rinse the cloth as needed to ensure it stays clean.

Step 4

Set the HEPA filter on a flat, even surface to air-dry. Do not place the filter in direct sunlight to dry, as it can damage the paper used in a filter.

Step 5

Rinse the filter under cool, running water to remove all dirt, dust and buildup.

Step 6

Run a soft cloth over the filter, while it's still in the running water to wipe away hard-to-remove buildup.

Step 7

Add a squirt of liquid dish soap to a bowl of warm water. Dip a soft cloth into the bowl and clean the filter surface.

Step 8

Run the filter under running water to remove soap residue.

Step 9

Set the HEPA filter on a flat, even surface to air-dry. Do not place the filter in direct sunlight to dry, as it can damage the paper used in a filter.
