How To Remove Silicon From Vinyl Floor

Things Needed

  • Putty knife

  • Mineral spirits

  • Isopropyl alcohol

Warning

Make sure your room is well ventilated before using mineral spirits. Remember that mineral spirits is flammable. Do not smoke while using, and dispose of rags as recommended by the manufacturer.

You've installed the new vinyl floor in your bathroom all by yourself, and the job looks great–until the next day, that is, when you realize you smeared silicone sealant on the floor when you sealed the tub and toilet. Don't panic: You won't have to rip up the floor and start over. You can remove silicone from a vinyl floor with a little elbow grease and a lot of patience.

Step 1

Scrape the dried silicone up gently with the edge of the putty knife, being careful not to gouge, cut or scratch the vinyl. Wipe up the loosened silicone as you work so it doesn't accumulate around your work area.

Step 2

Rub the cleaned area briskly with a rag dipped in mineral spirits. This will pull up any remaining silicone residue.

Step 3

Wipe the entire area with a second rag that has been dipped in isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. This will cut the oily film left by the mineral spirits.

Step 4

Clean the entire floor with your regular household floor cleaner after all spots of silicone have been removed. Your vinyl floor will be as good as new.
