How To Remove The Swinging Door In A Kitchen

While a swinging door does allow you a certain amount of privacy while cooking, shielding the rest of the house from the sights and sounds of the kitchen, it can sometimes be a nuisance. For example, it breaks up the space in a house or apartment, making rooms feel smaller. Also, if you have children or pets, they can sometimes get hurt if they get their fingers or paws stuck as the door swings. Luckily, you're not stuck with a swinging door if you have one. You can easily remove it.

Step 1

Examine the floor where the lower corner of the door pivots. You should see four screws installed in the floor. Unscrew these four screws with your screwdriver.

Step 2

Lift the cover plate that these screws were attaching to the floor. There might be another cover plate that connects the bottom hinge to the floor with another set of screws. Unscrew these screws and remove the cover plate.

Step 3

Grab the door with both hands and pull it toward you, removing it from the top pivot. Rest it on the floor. You can throw away your door or store it, keeping it ready to reinstall by just replacing the screws.
