How To Use Peat Pots

Peat pots are made of firmly compressed peat moss and shredded wood fibers. These pots provide an environmentally friendly way to start seeds or seedlings without using plastic or other nonbiodegradable planters. Peat pots can be planted directly in the ground, which reduces risk of root injury to seedlings since the plant is not disturbed when transplanting it into your garden soil.

Step 1

Place the peat pots in a baking pan or tray and fill each one with potting soil. Pour warm water slowly into the pan to allow the peat pots to soak up the water.

Step 2

Remove the pots from the water and place them on a tray. Plant your seeds or seedlings in the pots.

Step 3

Place the tray of peat pots in a warm, sunny area indoors or outdoors. Keep the potting soil and pots moist by placing them back in a pan of warm water when they start to dry out.

Step 4

Plant the pots in your garden, or in a planter, when the seedlings are at least 3 inches tall and the weather is warm enough for the type of plants you are growing. To plant the pots, dig a hole large enough and deep enough for the whole pot. No part of the pot should be exposed or the peat dries out and wicks moisture away from the plant roots.

Step 5

Water the plant immediately after planting the pot and keep it watered according to plant's irrigation needs.
