Are All Mounting Kits The Same For An Above-Range Microwave?
All mounting kits are not the same. They are specifically designed by the manufacturer for the model. Mounting kits are provided when you purchase the above range microwave or you can purchase one separately. The kits must vary in their configuration to properly accommodate hanging the microwave securely. Each kit may vary in precisely where it connects into the appliance and how many screws or bolts are required to support the microwave installation.
Rear Mount
One part of the mounting kit is the rear mounting plate. A template is sometimes provided to direct you as to how to position the mounting plate. Sometimes the plate serves as the template. When the mounting plate is the template, the manufacturer may direct you to position the plate on the wall so it lines up with the bottom of the cabinet. Mark the holes for the screws or bolts on the wall. The template should also include the outline for where to cut into the wall for the outside exhaust.
Cabinet Mount
The mounting kit includes a template for the under cabinet installation. Most above range microwaves have top support screws. A hole is drilled underneath the cabinet to fit through the power cord. Another cutout is needed to allow enough room for the exhaust adaptor to fit through, if you are venting the microwave to the outside.
Warnings and Tips
Most above range microwaves can not be mounted above an island; the proper installation, to support the weight of the microwave, must include a cabinet and wall mounting. Ensure at least one of the screws on the rear is mounted in a stud. If most of the holes do not line up with a stud, instead us a toggle bolt so the weight of the microwave is properly supported.
