Closing your pool is a simple task that can be done in a short amount of time. Typically you will find that your pool cover kit comes with a winch-styled cable tightener. This cable tightener will secure the pool cover, helping to keep the pool clean and free of debris throughout the winter and early spring. Learning how to correctly use this winch will raise your chances of opening a clean pool.
Step 1
Lower the pool water level to about 4 inches under the skimmer. This can be performed by using a regular screwdriver to loosen the adjustable clamps that secure the hoses to the return and skimmer lines, and removing the hoses. Use rubber plugs to seal off the return and skimmer fittings. Apply a pool closing chemical kit that consists of pool shock, pool winterizer, and a pool scale and rust protector.
Step 2
Inflate the air pillow and place it in the middle of the pool. You can secure this air pillow by using twine, run through the eye holes on the pillow and wrapped around a pool post. Stretch the pool cover across the surface of the pool. Make sure to carefully maneuver the pool cover under your pool deck or any obstructions that may block access to the pool rail.
Step 3
Weave the cable through the eyelets on the pool cover. Use an alternating over-and-under pattern when performing this act. Be sure that the cable is run through each and every individual eyelet; this will help to secure the cover properly.
Step 4
Weave the cable into the eyelets on the side of the winch cable tightener. With the winch horizontal, place the thumb grip in a vertical position so that the ends of the cable can be weaved through it. They should overlap completely with extra cable left over. Do not weave this back through the holes, let it hang, as it will end up getting wound up as well.
Step 5
Tighten the cable by twisting the winch clockwise. Continue twisting the winch until the cable is tight around the pool. As you tighten the winch, periodically check to make sure the pool cover is even around the pool. Also, ensure the cable is underneath the pool rail.
