How To Clean A Breville Espresso Machine

Cleaning Breville Barista espresso machines (and other Breville espresso models) can have a major impact on the flavor of your espresso, cappuccino and other coffee drinks. Old coffee grounds, residue from the natural oils found in coffee beans or even minerals from your water can build up inside the espresso machine and impart a bitter or unpleasant flavor to your drinks. You can prevent this by performing regular Breville coffee machine cleaning after each use and giving it a thorough, deep cleaning once monthly.

Regular Cleaning After Each Use

1. Removing Filter and Emptying Grounds

Remove the filter holder from your espresso machine as soon as it stops brewing. Empty the coffee grounds and rinse the filter and filter holder in warm water. If coffee grounds remain in the filter, use a nylon scrub brush to clean it gently.

2. Brewing Plain Water

Return the empty filter and filter holder to your Breville espresso machine and brew plain water into a cup for 10 to 15 seconds. Dispose of the hot water in the cup.

3. Rinsing Froth Enhancer

Pull the froth enhancer off the steam wand immediately after using it and rinse it clean under warm water.

4. Expelling the Milk

Turn the selector control on the front of your Breville espresso machine to the steam position for two to three seconds to blow any milk out of the wand.

5. Cleaning the Steam Wand

Turn the selector control to "Stand By" and unplug the espresso machine from the electrical outlet, and let the machine cool completely before you continue. Clean the opening on the steam wand with the pin on the end of the cleaning tool included with your Breville espresso machine. If the tip of the wand is extremely dirty or appears blocked, you can twist it off with the opening in the center of the cleaning tool and soak it in hot water to remove any clogs.

6. Cleaning the Drip Tray

Remove the drip tray from the bottom of the espresso machine and empty it into your sink. Wash all of the parts of the drip tray with warm water and dish soap. Rinse the items and dry them before returning them to your Breville espresso machine.

7. Wiping the Machine

Wipe down the outside of your espresso machine with a damp cloth.

Monthly Deep Cleaning

1. Descale Breville Machine

Set your Breville espresso machine to "Stand By" and unplug it from the electrical outlet. Fill the water tank with a 50:50 mixture of water and white vinegar to descale Breville espresso machine, also called decalcifying. If you have hard water, use 1 part water and 1 part white vinegar instead to remove any mineral buildup inside the machine. Place a large container onto the drip pan to catch the water and vinegar mixture.

2. Brewing the Vinegar Solution

Plug in your Breville espresso machine and turn it on. Wait for the orange temperature light to extinguish, indicating that the water is hot enough for brewing. Turn the selector control to "Espresso," and allow half of the vinegar and water mixture to run through the brewing head and into the large container.

3. Steaming the Vinegar Solution

Position the steam wand over the container and switch the selector control to "Steam." The rest of the mixture will flow out of the steam wand.

4. Rinsing the Breville

Fill the water tank with clean, cold water and repeat steps three through six to rinse your Breville espresso machine.
