A Minimal San Francisco Bachelor Pad Is Designed Around An Oversized Sofa (Of Course)
To have a career in the start up world, you have to be open to change. So when a 20-something bachelor in the tech industry found a sparse three-bedroom apartment in San Francisco, he wanted his hideaway to have those same nimble qualities. He called on designer Lauren Geremia — who is behind the Dropbox offices — to turn his property into a flexible locale that could easily accommodate any scenario that comes to the door. Geremia decided to work with the minimal renovation that a Scandinavian developer had previously completed by centering the the seamless living space around a large sofa. "I created countless iterations of furniture layouts with the same modular sofa for different scenarios: working from home, hosting parties, hosting parents," she said. The designer kept to a bare palette to play off the gray-washed hardwood floors, and highlighted black furnishings with warm, natural accents. "We wanted the furniture and materials to feel relaxed and easily adjusted," she said. The bachelor's new digs fit with his ever-evolving life, which means it may be a while before he needs version 2.0.

Another goal for the project was to curate an art collection for the client that he could build upon. A work by Noémie Goudal is displayed in the living area.

The modular Living Divani sofa makes the living area work well for relaxing or entertaining. A vintage bar cart and wine rack subtly separate the living and dining areas.

The black-and-white palette continues in the kitchen, which includes Avocet stools by Alice Tacheny and a print from BOOK/SHOP.

An oak display cabinet by Piet Hein Eek holds books and other treasures in the sunny office. Mellon Winslow Design + Build constructed the custom bay-window bench.

In the master bedroom, a photograph by Josef Hoflehner hangs over the bed, which is dressed with Matteo linens and a Bolé Road Textiles throw.
