How To Replace Eyeball Lights

An eyeball lighting fixture is a rotating socket that allows you to point the light in different directions. If you are replacing your eyeball light fixture, you already have a recessed lighting setup in place. This makes the process a relatively simple one that can be completed in less than an hour. Always make sure that you turn electricity off before attempting repairs. If there is a risk of someone else turning the power back on, leave a note attached to the circuit panel or lock it to ensure your safety.

Step 1

Switch off the power and secure the circuit panel. Place your ladder on level ground beneath the eyeball light fixture.

Step 2

Gently slide the putty knife under the trim on the edge of the eyeball lighting socket. Take care not to damage the ceiling. Gently pry the trim away from the ceiling. Slide the knife around the trim and lift gently until the trim pops off.

Step 3

Remove the screws that hold the existing light switch in place. Keep one hand on the light fixture when you remove the last screw to ensure that it doesn't fall down. Modern fixtures are secured directly to the ceiling with clips. Unclip the light fixture to replace it.

Step 4

Take note of the wiring. Unscrew the wire connectors and remove the old eyeball lighting fixture.

Step 5

Rewire the new fixture, using the same wiring configuration. Secure wires with wire connectors. Ensure that there are no exposed wires that may cause an electrical fire.

Step 6

Thread the wires back into the ceiling. Position the eyeball lighting fixture into place in the ceiling. Line the holes up with the existing holes and use the screws which come with the lighting fixture to secure the eyeball light to the ceiling. If your model uses clips, clip the new fixture into place.

Step 7

Screw in the lightbulb. Restore power and test out your eyeball light. Rotate the eyeball light to shine in a direction that suits your needs.
