How To Put Sand Between Pavers

Although any type of sand will work to set your pavers, mason's sand will provide the quickest and strongest interlock.
This type of joint will work well for any type of pavers, including concrete, stone and brick.
Most professionals install pavers only slightly above ground level. To do this, evenly scrape the bare ground with a flat shovel before you begin the process of installing your pavers. You should aim for the tops of your pavers to sit approximately 1 inch above the ground. This will provide a smooth transition from the ground to the pavers.
Installing your pavers over a bed of sand, rather than bare ground, will help your pavers to stay put. Some installations also used crushed rock below the sand layer. Spread a thin layer of sand, then compact it into the ground or onto the rocky base. Make sure the layer of sand is level before you begin installing pavers.
Warning
Do not use a strong flow of water when spraying your pavers. This could dislodge the sand from between the stones.
When creating a patio, driveway or walkway out of pavers, you must properly execute all the installation steps to obtain professional results. To sufficiently interlock the individual pavers that make up your patio or path, many professionals suggest filling the spaces between pavers with sand. When this is done correctly, the sand will keep the pavers in place during the lifespan of your patio or path. Properly installed, a path or patio constructed from pavers can last 20 to 30 years.
Step 1
Spread a thin layer of sand evenly over the tops of the pavers.
Step 2
Sweep the sand into all the spaces between your pavers, starting on one side and working your way toward the other. Use the broom to push the sand between the paving stones, sweeping in all directions until the sand is relatively compacted.
Step 3
Sweep any excess sand off of the surface of your pavers. Use a light touch, in order to avoid disturbing the sand in between the pavers.
Step 4
Turn on your hose and set the spray nozzle to low. Spray the pavers with water to help pack down the sand in between the pavers and wash any remaining sand from the surface. Allow the pavers and sand to dry completely.
Step 5
Start over by pouring more sand over the pavers and repeat the process. This will ensure all areas between the stones are filled with sand.
