How To Use Incense Cones

Things Needed

  • Incense burner

  • Sand or uncooked rice

  • Lighter or matches

Tip

If you want to extinguish the cone before it has burned out completely, turn it upside down and rub it in the ash or grain at the bottom of the burner. This allows you to use the rest of the cone later.

Wait for at least 30 minutes after the cone has burned out to empty the burner to avoid burning your hands.

Warning

Never use brass burners on wood surfaces. Brass burners conduct heat and can damage wood. Instead, use soapstone burners in this scenario, as they do not act as heat conductors.

Never burn incense with curtains or household objects within close proximity above the burner. The smoke can cause damage and discoloration to elements above it.

Never leave burning incense unattended as this could cause a fire.

Incense cones give off pungent aromatic fragrances used to enhance the scent of a room in general or during meditation and yoga practice. Cone incense is crafted from a mixture of powder and essential oils, giving it a rich texture and scent. However, using cone incense is not as simple as lighting a candle and letting it burn; there are a few additional steps and pieces of information vital to achieving the best result when burning.

Step 1

Select an incense burner large enough to hold the incense cone — the shape and sizes of both the incense cones and holders vary. If several of your fingers fit in the burner base and the base is bowl-shaped, it has room to catch ash from a lit incense cone.

Step 2

Place a small amount of sand or dry uncooked rice at the bottom of the burner. Layer it evenly so that the cone sits flat on top. These elements help improve the airflow in your burner, while helping to conduct less heat throughout the surface or base of the burner. Set the burner on a non-flammable surface such as a ceramic tile or stone countertop, away from flammable materials.

Step 3

Light the tip of the cone with matches or a lighter. Let 5 to 10 seconds pass and then extinguish the flame, blowing it out or fanning it with paper. The result will be a wafting spiral of smoke from the top of the cone as it begins to burn. Carefully place the cone in the burner and put the burner lid on top of it, if applicable. Allow the incense to burn down, giving off a rich aroma, until you are satisfied with the smell in the room.
