How To Glue Door Gaskets On A Refrigerator

Things Needed

  • Soap and water

  • Plastic scraper

  • Adhesive

  • Cloth

  • Acetone (optional)

Tip

Soak the new gasket in warm water for a half hour and dry it before beginning the application process. This softens the gasket and allows it to stretch more easily over the refrigerator's track.

The gasket on your refrigerator door is the seal that keeps the cold air in. The gasket is a flexible strip of plastic or silicone, and it is fixed to the edge of your refrigerator door. Over time, the gasket might tear or degrade, weakening the seal that keeps your refrigerator cold. While some gaskets are held in place using screws or are snapped on, others can be secured with glue. Check the packaging that came with your gasket to determine what it requires, and only use glue if the packaging directs you to do so.

Step 1

Clean the track that the gasket sat in using a mild soap and water, removing any debris or old glue residue with your fingers or with a plastic scraper.

Step 2

Apply a thin line of adhesive around the track where the adhesive was. There are several kinds of adhesive you can use for this task. If an adhesive came with your new gasket, use that adhesive. You may also use glues such as super glue, Gorilla Glue and E6000 for this purpose.

Step 3

Press the gasket into the track. The pressure as well as the glue will hold it there.

Step 4

Clean up any spilled glue immediately using a damp cloth. For stubborn spots, apply a small amount acetone to loosen the glue.

Step 5

Close the refrigerator door to hold the gasket to the track, and do not open it until the glue has cured. The amount of time needed for curing is referenced on the adhesive's package.
